Private yoga at Santosha Yoga is most often a one-on-one session between student and teacher. The teacher however may customize the class for an individual, couple, or even a small group. Private yoga provides a safe environment without distraction where the teaching is specifically tailored to the student’s individual needs. Private yoga classes are often used for beginners or individuals with injuries or disabilities. The content and structure of the instruction varies greatly depending on the student’s needs.

Yoga students can expect to spend some time describing their yoga objectives and which the teacher will use to create a yoga plan that addresses students specific needs. Goals may be focused on certain anatomical parts or have a general focus on strength or flexibility. If students have experienced an injury, the class will help identify methods and routines to support a healthy and speedy recovery. Students might be able to expect significant benefits to manifest within a few weeks or months depending on the nature of the injury or goals sought.

There are a few reasons students might opt for private yoga classes over group ones.

  1. A private yoga session will allow the student to get instruction specific to their needs, rather than the general needs of a larger class thus speeding the progression toward student goals.
  2. A private session encourages a sense of privacy and safety, free from observation and judgment of other students, as may feel like the case in a larger class.
  3. Students enjoy the focused attention from the teacher and the personalized relationships that develop from private yoga instruction.
  4. Private yoga sessions allow the student to schedule classes that work better for their schedule, offering more flexibility to get the classes a student needs at a time when they are available.

At this time, we offer 60-minute private yoga sessions here at Santosha Yoga in Bethany Village.

Preparation for a private yoga class is no different than for group yoga classes. Students should wear comfortable clothing that allows for a full range of motion of all the joints. Students may bring their own yoga mat and other yoga props if they are preferred over the studio-supplied props. Students should avoid eating a significant meal at least 2 hours before practicing and bring water with them. Students should come clean and without body odor. We please ask students to avoid any perfumes. Essential oils are generally ok. Students will practice barefoot unless there is a reason why they cannot.

Private yoga sessions require a notice at least 24 hours in advance to cancel a session without a fee. Teachers schedule their days and travel plans as well as prepare for private yoga sessions well in advance of the class to best support student’s goals.
