In this workshop, students will learn and practice yoga poses (Asanas) that are proven to reverse osteoporosis and build healthy bones when practiced consistently over time. Students will focus on the femur(s), the hips, and the spine throughout this workshop. Katy will provide immediate feedback on students’ execution of the poses to ensure everyone understands the best and safest way to practice these poses.

Osteoporosis Yoga FAQs

Yoga for osteoporosis is a practice of yoga based on the scientific findings of Dr. Loren Fishman, MD, a physiatrist and long-time yogi. Dr. Loren created several series of yoga poses proven to reverse osteoporosis and build healthy bones when practiced consistently over time. Our instructor, Katy Nadal, is one of the few yoga teachers in the Portland and Beaverton area who is certified to teach to teach his method.

Yoga can be incredibly beneficial for those dealing with or wanting to prevent osteoporosis. In addition to the usual benefits of yoga (improved balance, coordination, increased flexibility and range of motion, mental clarity), yoga for osteoporosis has been proven to improve bone density as well as the trabecular structure of the bone if done consistently over time.

Students do not need to do anything to prepare for this class. Students are encouraged to review this article beforehand to have a deeper understanding of the practice and science behind it before the class begins.

While most yoga poses are safe for those suffering from osteoporosis, poses that should be avoided are any that include the forward bending of the spine. This bending can cause compression fractures by placing pressure on the spine.
