Join Katy for a two-and-a-half-hour workshop focusing on yoga for the prevention or reversal of osteoporosis.
In this workshop, students will learn and practice yoga poses (Asanas) that are proven to reverse osteoporosis and build healthy bones when practiced consistently over time. Students will focus on the femur(s), the hips, and the spine throughout this workshop. Katy will provide immediate feedback on students’ execution of the poses to ensure everyone understands the best and safest way to practice these poses. It is not necessary to have taken yoga classes to attend this workshop.

Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak and brittle. The body constantly absorbs and replaces bone tissue. With osteoporosis, new bone creation doesn’t keep up with old bone removal.
There typically are no symptoms in the early stages of bone loss. Once bones are weakened by osteoporosis, symptoms may include back pain, stooped posture, loss of height over time and bones that break easily.
Medications, healthy diet, and weight-bearing exercise can help prevent bone loss or strengthen already weak bones.
Yoga poses, practiced with resistance and effort, can help prevent bone loss and even help strengthen weakened bones. There is ongoing research that supports this. Good nutrition is also important.
Working with an instructor who has been certified in how to teach Yoga for Osteoporosis, yogis learn specific poses that target the most frequently fractured bones and how to hold the pose in resistance.
Just themselves. We have all the props we need in the studio.
Absolutely! Using chairs, blocks, the wall, and yoga straps, even those who have never done yoga can learn a version of a pose that is accessible. Experienced yogis will learn how to challenge themselves. Those who have osteoporosis or low bone density, will be helped to stay safe. Through yoga, because we work on balance, range of motion, and strength yoga is also helpful in achieving fall prevention.
